Various Types of Wine and How to Serve Them

Wine has a variety of aromas and flavors. The presentation also cannot be haphazard, because it will affect the taste. Below are various types of wine and how to serve them that you can apply.
Wine is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks in the world. This drink is made from grape juice and usually uses the vitis vinifera grape variety.

In general, in this world two types of wine are popular, red wine and white wine. But in fact, apart from that, there are other types of wine such as rose wine, sparkling wine or known as champagne, and port wine.

If you are confused, here are the types of wine with suggestions and how to serve them.

Red Wine and White Wine

Red wine is made by processing red or black grapes and their skins. The famous types of red wine are Carbenet Franc, Carbenet Sauvignon, Dolcetto, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Tempranillo.

Meanwhile, white wine is made from processing yellow, golden, green grapes and several types of red grapes.

To produce white wine, the grapes are usually processed without the skin and only the juice is taken.

Famous white wines are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Verdelho.

In the world of wine, the term “red goes with red and white goes with white” is famous. This means that red wine is suitable for consumption with red meat, such as beef steak, and white wine with white meat such as seafood and some processed chicken meat.

When serving red wine, a convex glass is usually used which is smaller and wider.

Meanwhile, white wine uses a long glass with a stem at the bottom. The type of glass used will affect the aroma of the wine produced.

Rose Wine

Just like red wine, rose wine is made from red grapes and their skins. The difference is in the shorter fermentation and extraction process, which produces a pink color and is often considered to be similar to the color of roses.

It is not recommended to mix red wine and white wine to produce rose wine. Even in countries like France, this action is considered illegal and against the law.

The aroma sensation of each type of wine is different. To know the perfect taste, breathe deeply into the aroma of the wine. A strong alcoholic aroma indicates that the quality of the wine has decreased.

Champagne

You could say that champagne is white sparkling wine, so it is called sparkling wine because when it is poured into a glass it sparkles.

By law, this type of wine must be produced in the Champagne region, France, about a two-hour drive from Paris to the northeast, and only uses Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir grapes.

To produce the perfect champagne taste, it takes at least one and a half years for the fermentation process.

Champagne is usually served in a glass that is narrow at the top, tall and slender to maintain its “sparkling” character.

Because of its explosive taste, this type of wine is often drunk when celebrating something such as a victory, wedding or birthday.

Before drinking wine, first swirl the glass slowly to release the distinctive aroma of the wine. For Champagne, you don’t need to twist it because there is soda foam in it.

Port Wine

As champagne rules, port wine must be produced in the Douro Valley, a fertile valley north of the city of Porto, Portugal.

This type of wine is also known as dessert wine because its taste tends to be sweet. Port wine also pairs well with cheese, nuts or chocolate.

The good way to drink wine is to sip slowly and don’t swallow it straight away. Enjoy the taste of wine in your mouth for a few moments. Once the entire cavity is full of the taste sensation of the wine, then swallow it.

A good wine is one that has a balance of taste between sour, sweet, or slightly bitter.
